After more Americans became covered under the Affordable Care Act in 2014, most medical practices expected an influx of new patients in the months that followed. However, new patient visits to primary care doctors increased by only 0.3 percent from 2013 to 2014, according to a survey conducted by AthenaHealth.
Researchers initially speculated that most people would take advantage of health care after becoming insured, but the latest statistics show that the Affordable Care Act has simply converted about four percent of Americans from uninsured to insured statuses. As a result, more medical practices are turning to businesses that specialize in medical marketing for help with increasing patient attraction rates.
Health care researchers and consultants had initially assumed that newly insured individuals would immediately visit doctor’s offices to receive treatment for a variety of medical conditions, but the AthenaHealth survey found that not all people who buy health insurance are necessarily sick or require medical attention.
